chili spaghetti
an interesting combo that adds up to a delicious dinner
6 years ago, I tried 'chili spaghetti' for the first time. My wife and I had went to visit my in-laws, and it was what they were making for dinner. I had never tried it, but found it intriguing - after all, I love both of those things individually, so why wouldn't I like them together?
Happy to say that I loved them together, and chili spaghetti is still something we all make together quite frequently. Here is how you can put it together to try with your own family if you want.
ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes, with juice
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 can (8oz) tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, to give the chili some kick)
- 8 ounces spaghetti (or your favorite pasta)
- Water, for boiling
- Salt, for pasta water
- Optional: shredded cheese, parmesan, fresh cilantro, or sour cream for topping
cooking instructions
- In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti, and cook it according to its packaging instructions. Drain it when done, and set it aside.
- In a pot, brown your ground beef over medium heat. Break it apart using a spatula while it cooks, it should take about 5-7 minutes.
- Add your diced onion and minced garlic into the skillet. Saute' for about 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in the kidney beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes, stirring occasionally and allowing the flavors to begin to meld together.
- Bring the mix to a simmer, and reduce the heat to low. Let it cook for about 20 minutes, continuing to stir occasionally.
- Once the chili is ready, place the desired amount of spaghetti onto plates or in bowls. Then, pour the chili over the spaghetti until you have the desired amount covering your spaghetti noodles.
- Add in your optional toppings to the combination of spaghetti and chili, if you'd like.
- Serve immediately, and enjoy!
Chili spaghetti is a delicious combination of food that goes well together and complements each other nicely. I wasn't sure I was going to like it when I first tried it, and I ended up loving it so much I wanted to make it myself at home from time to time. Hopefully, if you want to try it out, you will enjoy it as well, and add an interesting new dish into your arsenal of tasty meals.
