homemade mexican seasoning
a delicious companion for tacos and other mexican plates!
My wife and I love to make taco salad, carne asada, and other Mexican dishes in our kitchen quite frequently. Obviously, you can imagine one of the things we use quite a bit is Mexican seasoning!
We began experimenting not long ago after being out of taco seasoning one night when we wanted to cook, so here is how you can make it at home like we do!
ingredients
- 1 tablespoon of chili powder (or paprika if you don't have chili powder)
- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of smoked or sweet paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon of dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- to taste, a few dashes of black pepper
- to taste, a few dashes of red pepper flakes
cooking instructions
- In a small bowl, combine all of the ingredients listed above in their appropriate measurements. Stir them up well using a whisk or a fork if needed.
- When done preparing your mix in the small bowl, you can transfer it to its own container. The best thing to do with it is to put it in a spice jar or airtight container. In order to preserve freshness, make sure to make sure it is sealed properly!
- Label your container so you know what you've got in it - put something like "Taco Seasoning" or "Mexican Seasoning" on the label and then you can store it away until you are ready to cook with it. Make sure you include the date on the label as well - this mix should stay fresh for up to six months as long as you store it away in a dry, cool place away from direct light.
This is a delicious mix to use when you want to make your own Mexican seasoning for use with your tacos and other dishes. You can mix it up ahead of time so you have plenty to use in your favorite plates, and you won't have to worry about store-brand Mexican seasoning anymore!
